Your Achilles tendon attaches the two major muscles of the calf, the gastrocnemius and the soleus, into the calcaneus (heel) of the foot. Achilles tendonitis is an overuse injury that is most common in joggers and jumpers, due to the repetitive nature of the activity. Most tendon injuries are the result of gradual wear and tear to the tendon from overuse or ageing. A tendon injury can happen suddenly or little by little. You are more likely to have a sudden injury if the tendon has been weakened over time.
Signs and Symptoms
• Slow onset • Sharp heel pain with loading the tendon with walking, stairs, running or quick movements • Pain in your heel with weight-bearing • Pain worse in the morning • Swelling at the base of your heel • Calf tightness • Thickened tender tendon on palpation
