Two main types of arthritis can occur in the hand, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is caused by ‘wear and tear’ of the joints, causing the cartilage to wear away. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disorder whereby the joint lining, or synovium, swells. There is also an increase of synovial fluid within the joint and fibrous tissue may develop. Rheumatoid arthritis is more common in the smaller, non-weight bearing joints of the hands.
Signs and Symptoms
• Pain and swelling • Stiffness • Loss of range of motion • Warmth within the joint • The sensation of grating or looseness within the joint • Cysts
