Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, which is a fluid filled sac that reduces friction between tendons and the underlying bone. There are several bursa around the hip; the most commonly affected is the trochanteric bursa (located at the side of the hip). Bursitis is commonly an overuse injury. It can also be caused by sustained pressure or by an acute injury such as a contusion.
Signs and Symptoms
• Pain in the buttock, outside hip and/or down the side of the leg • A bruised feeling over the site of the bursa • Pain after walking, running and going up stairs • Pain at night and difficulty sleeping
