Your knee “meniscus” or cartilage is a fibrous cushion the lies on the tibia (shin bone) and separates it from the femur (long thigh bone). It provides shock absorption and cushioning, as well as protecting the two bones from contacting each other. Each tibia has a medial (inside) and lateral (outside) meniscus. These can be damaged and torn from either sporting injuries such as twisting your knee, or as a result of wear and tear from normal aging processes or excessive use throughout life.
