Chondromalacia Patella refers to the damage of the cartilage behind the patella (knee cap). The damage can range from slight wear and tear to severe. It is likely to occur when the patella is not travelling normally along the femur (thigh bone) when the knee is being used – such as when squatting, climbing stairs or running.
Signs and Symptoms
• Pain around the knee, usually at the front of the knee or behind the patella • Pain after prolonged sitting • Pain when descending stairs • Pain with squatting and running • A sensation of grating or grinding (crepitus) as the knee moves • Swelling is rarely present
