Costovertebral joints are joints where a rib joins to the thoracic spine. These joints allow the chest to expand when taking a breath and the rib cage to move with thoracic spine movement. Costovertebral joints are commonly injured from repetitive coughing or sneezing. However, injury can also be a result of poor postures, muscle imbalance or abnormal breathing patterns.
Signs and Symptoms
• Pain to the side of the middle back (thoracic spine) • Pain on deep breath, coughing, sneezing or laughing • Pain that wraps around towards the front of the chest • Breathing difficulties • Muscle spasm over the affected joint
