The intervertebral discs lie between adjacent vertebrae (bones of the spine). Discs can protrude posteriorly (backward) or slight to either side (often called a disc bulge, herniation or protrusion depending on the severity) or they can degenerate, or sustain a tear. Disc injuries can potentially injure the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing local and referred pain.
Signs and Symptoms
• Painful and stiff neck • Pain radiating pain along the shoulder, neck, upper back and /or upper extremities (can be one or both sides) • Pins and needles and/or numbness along the shoulder, neck, upper back and/or upper extremities • Symptoms worsening with sustained positions of the neck • Weakness of the upper limbs • Loss of pain-free movement • Morning stiffness
