Frozen shoulder, medically referred to as Adhesive Capsulitis, is a disorder in which the connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed and stiff. It has two principal characteristics; pain and loss of movement. In approximately 90% of patients, frozen shoulder will last 1-2 years before subsiding and can cause significant upper limb debilitation during this time. In order to minimise the severity and length of these symptoms, it is important to engage the most effective treatment methods available.
Signs and Symptoms
• Constant pain • Pain worse at night • Loss in range of movement • Stage One – the “freezing” stage can last from 6 weeks to 9 months. During this stage, there is a slow onset of pain which gradually worsens as the shoulder loses movement • Stage Two – the “frozen” stage can last from 4 to 9 months. There is a slow improvement in pain, however the stiffness and loss of movement remains • Stage Three – the “thawing” stage can last from 5 to 24 months. Shoulder range of movement gradually returns to normal
