Occasionally, surgery to the lower back is required to rectify problems beyond conservative management. This can include surgery to alleviate pressure on nerve roots, spinal fusion, repair of damaged discs (cartilage of the spine) and removal of scar tissue, to name a few. The better shape the core muscles are in (deep muscles providing support to the lower back), the more efficient recovery is following the operation. Following surgery, it is imperative correct rehabilitation follows to ensure optimal function is restored.
Signs and Symptoms
• Localised pain at the site of surgery • Occasionally lower leg symptoms, often due to inflammation • Weakness of the deep abdominal muscles (core muscles) • Restricted mobility
