The ankle joint, like most joints in the body, is lined by hyaline articular cartilage. This is a firm smooth surface which allows the two surfaces of the joint to glide smoothly together during movement. This cartilage can become damaged during a typical ankle “sprain” where the foot and ankle turn “inwards”. Other types of ankle injuries can also damage the joint surface. This often occurs in work-related settings such as walking on uneven surfaces.
Signs and Symptoms
• Acute ankle pain • Swelling • Bruising – often severe • Ankle stiffness • Locking of the ankle – when a fragment or torn cartilage becomes loose, it can get caught between the ankle joint surfaces • Pain with weight bearing
