The labrum is a ring of cartilage that is attached to the socket of the hip joint. Its role is to deepen the hip joint. In doing so, it increases the stability of the joint and helps with shock absorption. The labrum can tear during an acute forceful injury such as landing heavily and twisting on a planted leg. The labrum can also tear due to degenerative wear and tear.
