The intervertebral discs lie between adjacent vertebrae (bones of the spine). Degenerative disc disease occurs when the intervertebral discs are subject to a process of degeneration which causes the disc to lose height and hydration. The often occurs with aging, but can be accelerated by previous injury to the spine. Degeneration can also occur in the facet joints of the neck.
